Believe in the Students

Believe in the Students

Showing students that we believe in them and their abilities is a powerful tool in the classroom. Creating a mutually safe environment for both teachers and students is an important step in laying the groundwork for that belief. Students will see that we genuinely care about them and their successes, and they will not want to let us down.

Listed are three ways to let students know you believe in them. Take a moment to think about how you already incorporate these three approaches in your classrooms, then reflect on how you might begin incorporating those approaches you are not already using.

  1. Give authentic praise
    • Direct it to the student
    • Make it specific
  2. Listen to the students
    • Value their perspective
  3. Tell them and show them you believe in them
    • Constantly build them up by telling them,
      "I believe in you."
    • Give the students space and time to show you they can succeed
