Rubric Tips

The use of rubrics can help you communicate your expectations to your students, and it also provides a more reliable means of assessment for assignments that are more subjective. Here are few tips to consider when using rubrics:

  • Hand out the grading rubric with the assignment…This will communicate your expectations with your and they also know how they will be graded.
  • When you are grading, use the rubric and return the rubric with the grading on it.
  • Get input from your students when developing the rubric. Many teachers find that students create higher standards for themselves than the teacher would.
  • Before students turn in a final version of an assignment, have the students exchange assignment drafts and give peer feedback using the rubric. Then give students a few days before the final assignments are turned in to make corrections.
  • Have students self-assess their final assignments using the grading rubric and hand in the self-assessment with the product.
