Sample Definitions of Performance

On any rubric, it is important to clearly define what is meant by the Levels of Performance. These definitions must be clearly understood by the teacher AND the student.

The sample levels shown on this page are examples, and the wording would be modified based on the assigned task, activity, or project.

For our purposes, the sample definitions of performance are:

  • Beginning – denotes performance that shows rudimentary or novice skill and knowledge level that is needed to move forward
  • Basic – denotes partial mastery of prerequisite knowledge; passing – but not at grade level
  • Proficient – represents solid academic and/or technical performance; at grade level work, and
  • Advanced – signifies superior performance and mastery of the academic concepts and/or technical competency
