Mobile Computer Labs

Mobile Computer Labs

Mobile labs are simply laptops on a cart that can be wheeled between classrooms. Relying on wireless Internet access, this tool allows a school to add a lab without taking up another room in the building. Occasionally the lab will also have a printer or scanner on the cart.

When using a mobile lab, consider these tips:

  • As with a typical lab, reserve the lab well in advance. More and more teachers are incorporating computers into their lessons, so it is sometimes difficult to get a lab when you need it
  • Double your expectations for a mobile lab. Students do not have the physical shift to a laboratory room, so it is important to set expectations with the machines. Damage to the computers is much more common in a mobile lab since it is the computers that are being transported rather than the students.
  • Think about room arrangement. Like a typical lab, students will get distracted on computers. Consider arranging the desks and tables so you can see every student's screen from one place.
  • Whether you can see the screens or not, walk around to help students and monitor their progress.
  • Charge your batteries. If you get the mobile lab a period or two early, be sure to plug it in to ensure full batteries when you need them. Cords can be tripped on, so full batteries are a must.
  • Of course, know the procedures to save/print/and more. In your room, you will be tech support
